Basílica de la Sagrada Família
Monumental unfinished basilica and Antoni Gaudí's supreme masterpiece
Welcome to the Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família, Antoni Gaudí's magnum opus and one of the most profound architectural achievements in human history.
HISTORICAL GENESIS: Initiated in 1882 under architect Francisco de Paula del Villar, Gaudí took over the project in 1883 at age 31, radically transforming the modest neo-Gothic blueprint into a cosmic temple of natural organic forms. Consecrated by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010, the basilica represents a century-long devotion to sacred architecture, funded entirely by private donations and ticket revenues.
ARCHITECTURAL ANATOMY: The basilica is engineered without traditional flying buttresses. Instead, Gaudí pioneered an internal forest of arborescent, double-curved helical columns carved from basalt, granite, and porphyry that branch outward to support massive hyperboloid vaults. Sunlight penetrates the eastern Nativity facade in cool blues and greens during morning hours, shifting to intense fiery reds and golds on the western Passion facade as the sun sets.
HIDDEN SYMBOLS & MYSTERIES: Look closely at the Nativity Facade to observe the Tree of Life topped by 18 white doves, and the cryptic 4x4 magic square on the Passion Facade whose numbers sum to 33 in all 310 combinations, representing the age of Christ at his crucifixion.
INSIDER OBSERVATION: Stand directly at the transept crossing and look 60 meters straight up toward the central hyperboloid vault. You are gazing into a stone canopy designed to resonate sound and natural illumination as an open forest clearing.
