Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter)
Medieval labyrinthine quarter resting upon the ancient Roman colony of Barcino
Stands upon the Roman colony of Barcino founded around 10 BC under Emperor Augustus. Rebuilt during the 13th to 15th centuries as the political and spiritual capital of the Crown of Aragon.
Winding stone alleyways, hidden interior courtyards, Roman defensive walls, and medieval palaces enclosing Plaça del Rei, the Saló del Tinell, and the Palace of the Generalitat.
The celebrated neo-Gothic bridge on Carrer del Bisbe was often assumed to be medieval, but was designed in 1928 by Joan Rubió for the 1929 International Exposition with a skull carved beneath its arch.
