Casa Milà (La Pedrera)
Monumental undulating limestone fortress with sentinel rooftop chimneys
Constructed between 1906 and 1912 for Pere Milà and Roser Segimon. It was the last private civil residential palace designed by Gaudí before dedicating his full focus to the Sagrada Família.
Pioneered a free-plan structure eliminating load-bearing walls using iron girders and stone columns. The rooftop features 28 sculptural ventilation shafts and chimneys shaped like helmeted stone knights guarding the urban plain.
Local satirical cartoons mocked the building as a zeppelin hangar or an earthquake ruin, generating the derisive nickname 'La Pedrera' (The Stone Quarry), which later became its badge of honor.
