Crypt of Colònia Güell
Gaudí's supreme structural laboratory of catenary arches and tilted pillars
Commissioned in 1898 by Count Eusebi Güell as a workers' church for his textile colony in Santa Coloma de Cervelló. Gaudí worked on the site from 1908 until 1914, completing the lower crypt before work was halted.
Gaudí's experimental stereostatic laboratory where he suspended weighted string models to calculate compression catenary curves. Features tilted basalt pillars, hyperbolic paraboloid brick vaults, and butterfly-shaped stained glass.
Myths suggested the church remained unfinished due to a curse, whereas construction ceased solely due to Count Güell's health crisis and financial reorganization.
