Hôtel National des Invalides & Dôme
Baroque royal veteran sanctuary crowned by the golden Dôme and Napoleon tomb
Founded in 1670 by King Louis XIV as a home and hospital for wounded and aged war veterans. The landmark Dôme des Invalides, designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart, was completed in 1706.
The radiant gilded dome stands as a solar crown celebrating French military valor and the eternal memory of the Sun King and Emperor Napoleon.
The red quartzite sarcophagus of Napoleon was rumored to be cursed by Corsican mystics, though it was simply mined in Russian Karelia by order of King Louis-Philippe.
