Musée Marmottan Monet
World's largest collection of Claude Monet works including Impression, Sunrise
Originally an Empire-style hunting lodge belonging to the Duke of Valmy, purchased by Jules Marmottan in 1882. Bequeathed to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1932. Expanded with major donations from Claude Monet's son Michel in 1966.
The intimate sanctuary of Impressionism's genesis, where the painting that gave the entire art movement its name is permanently preserved.
Monet's seminal 1872 painting 'Impression, Sunrise' (Impression, soleil levant) was titled spontaneously when art critic Louis Leroy mocked its loose brushwork in a satirical review.
