Park Güell Monumental Reserve
Visionary garden-city and monumental park with iconic mosaic terraces
Commissioned in 1900 by industrialist Count Eusebi Güell as an exclusive residential estate of 60 private villas. The urbanization halted in 1914 with only two houses completed, and the municipal council opened it as a public park in 1926.
Initiatory landscape garden featuring the iconic polychrome Salamander (El Drac) on the dragon staircase, an 86-column Hypostyle Hall functioning as a rainwater cistern, and an undulating serpentine bench surfaced in trencadís broken ceramic mosaic.
Esoteric circles claim the park was designed as an open-air Temple of Apollo or an alchemical transmutation journey, whereas Güell and Gaudí intended it as a hygienic, deeply Christian garden-city.
