Basilique du Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre
Romano-Byzantine white travertine sanctuary towering over Montmartre hill
Constructed between 1875 and 1914 by architect Paul Abadie as a national vow of penance following the Franco-Prussian War and the 1871 Paris Commune. Perched at 130 meters elevation atop the Butte Montmartre.
A luminous spiritual mountain fortress, its gleaming white travertine domes purify the Parisian skyline and anchor unbroken prayer over the metropolis.
Montmartre's subterranean gypsum mines were said to contain ancient Druidic caves where early martyrs including Saint Denis performed clandestine nocturnal rites.
