Documented Historiographical History

Construction began in 1882 under architect Francisco de Paula del Villar and was taken over by Antoni Gaudí in 1883, who radically transformed it into an organic forest of stone. Consecrated by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010, it is funded entirely through private donations and visitor admissions.

Architectural & Symbolic Reading

Cosmic vertical axis featuring 18 monumental spires representing the Twelve Apostles, the Four Evangelists, the Virgin Mary, and Jesus Christ rising 172.5 meters. The interior hyperboloid stone columns branch like ancient trees to diffuse natural daylight.

Historical Legends & Mysteries

Legends claim the crypt conceals an alchemical laboratory of golden ratios and Masonic geometry, though Gaudí's calculations were purely rooted in Catholic theology, geometry, and natural physics.

Insider Curiosities & Secret Facts
•Deliberately 172.5m tall — 0.5m shorter than Montjuïc hill because Gaudí believed human work should never surpass God's nature.
•The Passion Façade has a 4x4 Magic Square where rows, columns, and diagonals always sum to 33, Christ's age at death.
•The stone tree columns use varying hardness: basalt and porphyry for the high-load center, softer Montjuïc stone for the perimeter.
