Basílica de Santa Maria del Mar
Purest Catalan Gothic basilica built by the maritime dockworkers (Bastaixos)
Constructed between 1329 and 1383 by architects Berenguer de Montagut and Ramon Despuig, funded entirely by maritime dockworkers and guild merchants.
Built in an exceptionally rapid 54 years, achieving pure stylistic harmony with slender octagonal pillars spaced 13 meters apart and soaring unified vaults.
Bronze sculptures flanking the entrance doors honor the 'Bastaixos' who carried tons of stone on their backs from Montjuïc quarries to build the church.
