Casa Vicens
Antoni Gaudí's first private residential masterpiece with Neo-Mudéjar flair
Built between 1883 and 1885 as a summer retreat for stockbroker Manuel Vicens i Montaner in Gràcia. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2005 and opened to the public as a permanent museum in 2017.
Manifesto of the Neo-Mudéjar style blending Islamic geometric tilework with Catalan brick masonry. Decorated with green and white glazed ceramic tiles depicting French marigolds that grew wild on the construction lot.
Folk rumor held that Vicens went bankrupt paying for the house's extravagant ceramic tiles, though historical records confirm he maintained financial solvency throughout the project.
